where i've been

Kevin did this, and I got curious.

states i've visited

I counted places that I had really visited...like spent time and seen sites. No drive-throughs or airports. Pretty cool, huh?

Even more amazing to me was this one...
european countries i've visited

I added the Netherlands because we're going there in two weeks. I figure that's fair.

I was gonna do the one for the whole world, but I realized that it only added 3 countries (Canada, Mexico and Morocco), so what's the point.

Those are fun little webapps.

I lose six states if I play by your "no airports, no drive-thrus" rules: OH (Burger King and a paper at CLE one morning), RI (one southbound train ride), KY (one IA/MO round trip), AL (Sugar Bowl round-trip), and AR (one TX round trip) I can live without. But I've got to dispute Delaware -- shouldn't we get some credit for repeated drive-thrus, especially when it's a state that's unavoidable on I-95 and, well, kinda pointless otherwise? ;-) I wind up with 23/51 (counting DC as a state for this purpose).

But I added Ontario to my Canadian provinces map this weekend. Frequent flyer miles plus Priceline hotel == good stuff.

amy (March 3, 2004 11:23 PM):

If I counted my drive-thrus, I'm not 100% what I'd add...'cause my recollection of geography is so unbelievably crappy. Probably RI and ...Mississippi? Did we go through Mississippi getting to the Sugar Bowl in 1999?

I would be willing to grant you Delaware--but only on the *repeated* drive-thru argument. Just because Wayne and Garth weren't psyched about Delaware (remember that?) doesn't mean it's totally pointless. ;) You can take the Cape May-Lewes ferry. I seem to recall that people do day trips there from Jersey (on the ferry) just to shop with the Delaware sales tax (lower? none? I don't remember)...and maybe there are some outlets near the station?

(I must hesitantly admit that one of the few intentional visits to Delaware in my own life was to go to a Meatloaf concert.)

BTW, post your maps folks!

...This is, of course, directed to all 3 of you who actually read the lameness that is my site on a day-to-day basis.

Josh Crockett (March 4, 2004 12:27 AM):

Yeah, we cut through southeastern MS on our way to the Sugar Bowl. It only escapes drive-thru status for me because of a random side trip from New Orleans that my dad and I took a few years beforehand, on which we wound up at the Stennis Space Center.

I'm working on a post which will include maps, never fear. At least two of them, if the digital camera behaves.

Yeah, so apparently it won't put an image in directly. I can see your maps from here though, so I'll edit posts like I did to David's above so anyone who wants to can post their maps.

And let me be the first to say...holy cow, David!

Mandy (March 4, 2004 11:50 PM):

and may I also add my "holy cow!"

I would love to be as "traveled!"
Once Steve and I get back from the honeymoon and start saving up that leave from work again... I'm gonna be ready to hit the road!

I'm not even going to post a map, it would be so sad... :o) Although I suppose I should get some points for Thailand.

Kev (March 9, 2004 11:46 PM):

Very nice.. I like the European one! Believe it or not, I might have to take West Virginia off of my map if we count the "no drive-throughs rule." I can't think of any time that I've actually _stayed_ in West Virginia for any time. And by the way Josh.. Delaware has beaches... so drive-through's don't count for that one!

PS: I should have done like you did and cut/pasted onto my website instead of directly linking to the image. It's not loading anymore :( US=[ME, RI, MA, NJ, DE, PA, DC, MD, VA, NC, SC, GA, FL, IL, OH, LA, CA]; Europe=[Ireland, France]

amy (March 11, 2004 08:42 AM):

Isn't Winter Place in WV? That was the closest skiing to Bburg, and I think that can count as an activity. But even if it's not there, I did an astronomy research project in WV my senior year.

I copied the pictures, 'cause I had trouble even getting to the site several times. Maybe they bit off more than they could chew on bandwidth... Their service is too cool to last... ;)

AH! Amy's site!! It only took me two years to finally write it down correctly! And I took french!

I am responding to an older write - up, amy, but I wanted to point out, that Delaware, inDEAD has NO sales tax; In addition, it is home to DuPont (since 1700s I think)and its state bird is a blue hen!! NOTE ON SHOPPING IN DELAWARE: Its necessary to remind people that NJ, PA, NY, and MD are shopping in your mall too, so there too there's really not much room left to park.
